FAW, VW and Toyota suspended output at plants in Changchun

China locked down the city of Jilin province, threatening auto manufacturing output in the nation’s latest effort to contain a resurgent Covid pandemic led by the omicron variant.

FAW , Volkswagen Group and Toyota said they suspended output through Wednesday at plants in Changchun, where authorities issued lockdown orders.

The FAW-Volkswagen factory halts the production of FAW-Volkswagen and Audi models,  including the CC, Magotan, Bora, C-Trek from the Volkswagen lineup, and  the A4, A6, Q5, and Q3 models from the Audi lineup.

Toyota’s Changchun plant, a joint venture with FAW Group, produces vehicles including the popular RAV4 crossover.

“China’s economy could be severely hit again,” said Nomura in a note, adding that the COVID situation in China had deteriorated at an “alarming” pace over the past week.

“The outbreak has now reached almost every part of China with significant economic importance,” Nomura said.
